The longer that someone suffers from chronic pain, the more that pain can affect both physical and emotional health. CPM Health Centres conducts a 12 hour group-based patient program that was developed by researchers at Stanford University in California and customized to meet the needs of chronic pain. The CPM Chronic pain self-management program is a psychoeducational, cognitive behavioral program which helps patients better understand the chronic pain process and teaches non-medicated coping strategies.
Subjects covered include: 1) techniques to deal with problems such as frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation, 2) appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility, and endurance, 3) appropriate use of medications, 4) communicating effectively with family, friends, and health professionals, 5) nutrition, and, 6) how to evaluate new treatments.
It is the process in which the program is taught that makes it effective. Classes are highly participative, where mutual support and success build the participants’ confidence in their ability to manage their health and maintain active and fulfilling lives.
Does the program replace existing programs and treatments?
The Self-Management Program will not conflict with existing programs or treatment. It is designed to enhance regular treatment and disease-specific education such as, cardiac rehabilitation, or diabetes instruction. In addition, many people have more than one chronic condition. The program is especially helpful for these people, as it gives them the skills to coordinate all the things needed to manage their health, as well as to help them keep active in their lives. Comments / Feedback on CPM Chronic Pain Management Program
Very good instructions and delivery. The fact that the facilitator suffers with chronic pain made the sessions better, especially because she can relate.
Excellent keep up the good work.
Great support group. More groups like this need to be available for those who experience pain; it can be a very lonely place. Look forward to meeting with others who are struggling to cope.
I had great support; I developed a love for others because the leader was great and competent.
The course has been a very positive influence in getting me to realize I am not alone. It gave me new coping strategies to have a better life, with reduced pain
Thank you so much
